19) C is for... Crawl

The challenge: To play through each of the games on my Steam library.
The rule: I have to play at least 1 hour of each game, in alphabetical order.

So you've probably heard of one of the original rogue-likes - Crawl. When I saw this game was next on the list I was expecting just that, the ascii turn-based dungeon crawler, or possibly an updated graphical version. This is not that. This is WAY BETTER.

Most of the monsters on screen here are being controlled by players. It's rad

Crawl is a game obviously designed for multiplayer, and the fact that I had such a blast playing it single player is a testament to how awesome it is. You're an adventurer trying to escape from a procedurally generated dungeon. Easy enough, except your friends play ghosts who are also trying to do the same. The ghosts can inhabit monsters, spawn slimes and even possess traps to try their very best to kill you. The neat part is that the ghost who lands the final blow on the human adventurer, becomes the adventurer.

Here we see that the adventurer has a cold

The whole game is a race to get your adventurer to level 10, then face and defeat the final boss (which has three different sections the ghosts can inhabit, so they need to work together to puppeteer this huge tentacle beast). There's also a superbly innovative leveling system, where the adventurer gets XP for each monster they kill, but every time the adventurer levels up, all of the ghost players get XP to spend on making their monsters bigger and better.

One ghost controls each tentacle, and one controls his eye laser

The art is simple but that's really a plus - with one alive player and three ghosts, plus a bunch of traps and slimes the screen can get very busy. The music is rad too, in that fast chip-tuney way that suits this kind of game's style.

So, given that I'm already planning an evening where I can get pals over to give this amazing game a go, it's definitely a GG.
